His practice explores human consciousness, emotional conditioning, identity, and the relationship between our internal psychological experience and the external world. Filinson studied cinematography at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles in 2004. In 2011, he relocated to New York to concentrate on fine-art photography, combining his interests in cinema, painting, and traditional photographic processes. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at MuMa, Museum of Modern Art in Le Havre, France; the Knockdown Center in New York; the Dostoevsky Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia; and Keystone Art Space in Los Angeles. He has also participated in artist residencies in France and Belgium, including an eight-month residency with the Belgian Artistic District in Brussels. His experimental films Heartwork (2021), The Mechanics of Intimacy (2020), and Reflections & Projections (2019) examine the psychological structures through which human beings experience themselves and their relationships. Combining 16mm film, digital cinematography, and fine-art photographic approaches, these works investigate childhood conditioning, emotional responsibility, and the possibilities of self-awareness. His films have received 20 recorded festival awards and 51 official selections internationally, with recognition for experimental filmmaking, cinematography, directing, and editing. In 2019, Reflections & Projections was presented at Keystone Art Space in Los Angeles as an exhibition combining 35mm photographic prints and a 16-screen moving-image installation.
